Jeff’s got Jaws

Jeff est un jeune journaliste africain, non voyant. Il travaille dans des conditions difficiles pour la principale station de radio du Liberia, Star Radio à Monrovia.

Jeff produit une émission hebdomadaire « We too have a voice » dans laquelle il parle de la situation des non-voyants en Afrique. Il prépare son émission seul ; il effectue des recherches sur internet, il enregistre ses interviewes sur son minidisc, les monte ensuite sur son PC. Comme Jeff est très créatif, il aide parfois à l’écriture et à la production de spots publicitaires. J’ai d’ailleurs vécu un moment émouvant, en enregistrant un spot en duo avec Jeff dans le studio de Star Radio à Monrovia. Je lisais mon texte et en face de moi Jeff déchiffrait son braille. 

Son rêve était de pouvoir utiliser la version pro du logiciel Jaws . Jaws veut dire : Job Access With Speech (Accès de travail avec la voix). C’est un logiciel de lecture d’écran pour déficients visuels, sous Windows qui transforme un texte affiché sur un écran en un texte oral ou un texte en Braille grâce à une plage tactile spécifique. La version pro coûte environ 1’100 US$.  La société qui produit Jaws, basée en Floride est Freedom Scientific (www.freedomscientific.com).

Grâce à l’efficacité et aux talents de conviction de Sharon Bylenga (Fondation Hirondelle) qui a obtenu du créateur de Jaws (Freedom Scientific) un exemplaire gratuit et avec le soutien logistique (financement des frais d’envoi) de Jacques Iribarren de 100% Radio à Mazamet (F),  Jeff vient de recevoir à Monrovia son exemplaire gratuit de Jaws !

You might not know me for real, but I’m the journalist at the Independent Star radio-Liberia that Sharon Bylenga talked about for the jaws software. Fortunately I received it last Saturday. For me, this will make a great impact on my work here at Star Radio for the fact that, using jaws will get me to places in digital production. We’re presently using cool edit pro and the adobe audition software for broadcast production purposes. Before I even got the demo verson of jaws, it was very difficult to have access to a PC and therefore, getting a job seemed inevitable for me. When I travelled to the USA in 2006, I was fortunate to attend a six week access technology training course with the New Mexico Commision for the Blind in ?Albuquerque, NM. Ever sence that training and my return, I brought along a demo copy of jaws which before the arrival of the full version, helped a lot but quite frustrating after the demonstration time expires.
 
So in this light, I’m grateful for your kind gesture, donating a software to someone who’s greatly in need.
